Choeur Capriccio

In 2012, the Capriccio Children’s Choir was awarded the Great Prize of the « Singing World » International Competition in Saint Petersburg together with the Prize of the Public, the First Prize in Contemporary Music and the Artistic Prize.
Since the creation of the contest, this unprecedented series of prizes won Capriccio the name of “Magic Choir” in the main newspaper in town: “Petersburgskie Novostie” (10/08/ 2012).

Created in 1996 on the initiative of Marie-France Messager who teaches at the Nevers National Music Academy, the Capriccio Choir numbers about 30 children and teenagers aged between 8 and 20. The choir’s repertoire gives precedence to baroque masterpieces, Slav folklore, French and English music of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Since the year 2006, the children have benefited from formal vocal training and from original theatrical stage directions both based on the Stanislavski method and Senseï Kenji Tokitsu’s precepts. Albena Dimitrova, teaches singing at the Nevers National Music Academy and provides courses in these different training methods.

On the occasion of musical and personal meetings, very special links have been woven between the Capriccio Choir and composers, which eventually resulted in such creations as:
- “Oratorio of our Time” by the Bulgarian composer Liubomir Pipkov in Saint Peter’s Collegiate Church in Nevers on May 10th 1999.
- “Give me Memory”, a cantata by Annick Chartreux in Paris Madeleine Church on January 27th 2005.
- “Ballad” by Isabelle Aboulker in the Great Theatre in the Nevers Arts Centre on March 31st 2011.
- “Z’Arbres”, a cantata by Annick Chartreux in Saint Petersburg’s Imperial Chapel on August 6th 2012.

- February 2013, the choir recorded this oratorio with the National Police Brass Band.

- July 2013, as part of the commemorations for the hundredth anniversary of the First World War, the Capriccio Choir’s “memory project” was granted the State Label by the government trademark registration department. It pointed out this label “is to single out the most innovative and the most structural projects for the territories”.

The Nièvre project was the only one to get this State Label. So, the Capriccio Choir’s “memory project” dedicated to Isabelle Aboulker’s oratorio: “1918, the Man who Staggered through the War battlefields” will be the sole representative performance of the Nièvre County taking part in the 2014-2018 centennial commemorations.
